Oh, but it grieves him to see Watson hurting. It's hitting him rather unexpectedly how much he misses Holmes, yes, but how much he grieves for Watson, too. That he cannot grieve as he'd like to. That the world as he knew it has been torn out from under him. He swallows these thoughts down with a sip of brandy and tries to stay practical.
"Well, this is a good start," he points out, after a long sigh of his own. He nods around at Holmes's things. "Keeping busy. Being productive. Have you considered a job? I could see what I could do for you, if you'd like to work at a hospital, or at the Yard." He stops himself from babbling with another sip of brandy.
